Ben Mercer thinks he knows exactly what his future holds. Like his bitter Uncle Henry be will stay at Cooks Landing barely making ends meet by selling butter eggs and gasoline to rich cottagers doing their old jobs and resenting their condescension. But then a wealthy widow hires Ben to fix up her cottage and for the first time be allows himself to believe that escape might be possible. When Ruth Chapman talks to Ben about her life in New York City he sees himself there too. When she hires him to play his violin at a dinner party he realizes his gift could unlock the possibilities of the world. And hen summer comes to an end Ben must finally face both his own limitations and those of the people he loves. «
