Preface The following account of the preparations made in this country toresist the Spanish Armada in the year 1588 is taken principally from amanuscript once in the possession of Lord de Ramsey but now in the BritishMuseum. The manuscript contains the muster roll of the company commanded byOliver Cromwell copies of several despatches from the government of the dayas well as letters from Sir Henry Cromwell who took a prominent part inorganizing the forces of the county. Many of the earliest books particularlythose dating back to the 1900s and before are now extremely scarce andincreasingly expensive.
