This book gives a mathematical treatment of a novel concept in material sciencethat characterizes the properties of dynamic materialsthat is materialsubstances whose properties are variable in space and time. Unlike conventionalcomposites that are often found in nature dynamic materials are mostly theproducts of modern technology developed to maintain the most effective controlover dynamic processes. These materials have diverse applications tunablelefthanded dielectrics optical pumping with highenergy pulse compressionand electromagnetic stealth technology to name a few. Of special significanceis the participation of dynamic materials in almost every optimal materialdesign in dynamics. The book discusses some general features of dynamicmaterials as thermodynamically open systems it gives their adequate tensordescription in the context of Maxwells theory of moving dielectrics and makesa special emphasis on the theoretical analysis of spatiotemporal materialcomposites such as laminates and checkerboard structures. Some unusualapplications are listed along with the discussion of some typical optimizationproblems in spacetime via dynamic materials. TOCPreface. A General Conceptof Dynamic Materials.
