What set antisemites apart from antiantisemites in Imperial Germany was not somuch what they thought about the Jews but what they thought should be doneabout them. Like most antiantisemites German Social Democrats felt that theantisemites had a point but took matters too far. In fact Socialist antiantisemitism often did not hinge on the antisemites antiJewish orientation atall. Even when it did the Socialists arguments generally did more toconsolidate than subvert generally accepted notions regarding the Jews. Byfocusing on a broader set of perceptions accepted by both antisemites and antiantisemites and drawing a variety of new sources into the debate this studyoffers a startling reinterpretation of seemingly wellrehearsed issuesincluding the influence of Karl Marxs Zur Judenfrage and the positions ofvarious leading Social Democrats Franz Mehring Eduard Bernstein AugustBebel Wilhelm Liebknecht Karl Kautsky Rosa Luxemburg and their peers. «
