A French journalist and novelist he created the roman policier with aseries of books involving private detective Monsieur Lecoq who workslogically. Lecoq was based on a reallife thief turned policeman named FrancoisVidocq 17751857 whose memoirs mixed fiction and fact. Gaboriaus hugefollowing was eclipsed by Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes. InterestinglyHolmes may have been at least partly based on another of Gaboriaus charactersconsulting detective Father Tabaret whose methods Monsieur Lecoq adopts in thefirst Lecoq book. «
