How do we construct national identities in discourse? Which topics whichdiscursive strategies and which linguistic devices are employed to constructnational sameness and uniqueness on the one hand and differences to othernational collectives on the other hand? The Discursive Construction of NationalIdentity analyses discourses of national identity in Europe with particularattention to Austria.In the tradition of critical discourse analysis the authors have developed amethod of description and analysis of national identity which has applicationsto many other western European states. The authors interpret ongoingtransformations in the self and other definition of national identity usingan innovative approach which combines discoursehistorical theory andmethodology and political science approaches. The book analyses the rhetoricalpromotion of national identification and the linguistic construction andreproduction of national difference on public semipublic and semiprivatelevels within a nation state. It contains many concrete text and discourseexamples as well as analyses.In addition to the critical discourse analysis of multiple genres accompanyingvarious commemorative and celebratory events in 1995 this extended and revisededition is able to draw comparisons with similar events in 2005.
