PREFACE In this study ofthe theory of simplicity the way of nature in the England of 1770 I havebegun with an essay intended to set forth the general conviction thatcivilisation had somehow or other failed of its goal was at least on thedecline and that primitive man in his savage or even animal state wasbetter off than the citizens of Europe. The dream of a finer nation conceivedin simplicity and liberty in which the arts and particularly poetry mightflourish as in their native soil is the subject of the paper on Corsica whichforms the second essay.......Many of the earliest books particularly thosedating back to the 1900s and before are now extremely scarce and increasinglyexpensive.
