Why Tony Soprano? What can any businessperson learn about leadership from a foul-mouthed, fictional mob boss? I don't claim Tony Soprano is a perfect leader, and I acknowledge he is a tragically flawed human being. I would argue, however, that he is a remarkably efective boss who can teach MBAs a thing or two about leadership.
Organizations today require leaders who know how to get things done, who are skilled at cutting through red tape and at finding innovative solutions to complex problems. This is one of Tony's strenghts, and grasping how he gets things done often inspires executives to come up with their own, Tony-like approaches.
As you might guess, I didn't want to write a typical book on leadership. I've seen how people's eyes glaze over when they start reading articles and books that are heavy on theory and light on application, and I wanted this book to be fun and accessible. Surprisingly, perhaps, many of Tony's strategies and tactics are right in line with contemporary leadership theory, so the underlying message are often similar. Tony, however, makes it look easy. Armed with Tony's strenghts and aware of his weaknesses, you can implement the lessons learned from him to enhance your own leadership effectiveness. «
