At 21 he went to London to clerkfor a solicitor. He then began working for a magazine called Women. When henoticed the poor material being submitted he began writing a serial for theperiodical. First published in 1910. Edwin Clayhanger is the central figure inthis portrayal of Victorian lowermiddleclass society. As a shy young manEdwin is bullied by his father Darius but he succeeds in developing hisinterests in spite of a restrictive environment.
